Sur sept sites de recherche permanents répartis du nord du Québec jusqu’en Ontario, Sergio Rossi et son équipe réaliseront un suivi minutieux de plusieurs érablières grâce à de multiples capteurs et analyses. Le projet, qui a reçu un financement important du Conseil de recherches en sciences naturelles et en génie du Canada (CRSNG) en décembre 2024, s’étalera au moins sur trois ans. L’objectif est de collecter davantage de données sur l’érable dans le contexte de la hausse des températures et de la variabilité climatique, qui soulève des questions importantes sur l’avenir de l’industrie.

Un scénario très pessimiste prévoit même que la majorité des érablières ne seraient plus dans une zone climatique favorable pour la croissance des érables d’ici 2100. Et donc huit des dix régions les plus productives sortiraient de la « niche climatique » favorable à la production de sirop d’érable.  Certains acériculteurs constatent déjà les effets du réchauffement climatique sur leur récolte de sirop d'érable.  ... Sergio Rossi, professeur en écologie forestière de l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi: « Il se peut que certaines régions du Québec puissent bénéficier de ces changements et que d'autres zones soient impactées négativement. Par exemple, cela pourrait être positif pour les régions plus au nord, comme le Saguenay Lac-Saint Jean. Avec les changements climatiques, on peut s'attendre à un déplacement vers le nord de la zone qui est favorable à l'érable mais attention au type de sol dans ces régions, les érables ne seront peut-être pas capables de s'adapter au sol de la forêt boréale » ...« Selon moi, le meilleur choix, c'est de tenir toutes les portes ouvertes, assurer une bonne biodiversité de peuplement forestier et des érablières, maintenir une richesse en espèce dans les érablières et assurer la régénération des érables, si jamais il y a une augmentation de la mortalité ».

L’annonce est accueillie avec consternation et colère. L’avocat de profession dénonce le détournement de la transition énergétique à des fins militaires américaines. C'est un projet minier qui, depuis plusieurs années, est présenté comme une soi-disant solution à la crise climatique. Or, aujourd'hui, on apprend que l'intérêt manifeste envers ce projet est dédié à soutenir la course aux armements et finalement le soutien de la guerre dans le monde.

In Quebec's Laurentians region, a few kilometres from a wildlife reserve and just outside the town of Duhamel, lies a source of one of the world's most sought after minerals for manufacturing electric vehicle batteries: graphite. Since Lomiko Metals Inc., a mining company based in Surrey, B.C., announced plans to build a graphite mine in the area, some residents living nearby have protested the project, fearing the potential harm to the environment. But opposition has only gained steam after locals found out last month that the Pentagon is involved in the project.

(Lomiko) towards developing its open-pit graphite mine in the Petite-Nation region of Quebec. This project lies within the heart of the recreational tourism triangle between Montreal, Ottawa, and Mont-Tremblant. The Canadian federal Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources is also providing a C$4.9 million subsidy.

State officials have decided to begin removing an aeration system in Lake Carmi and may soon move forward with an alum treatment after finding the system actually exacerbated conditions creating harmful cyanobacteria in the lake ...  But the system repeatedly malfunctioned, making it difficult for state officials to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the system ... The system worked by sending compressed air through a tube to a “manifold,” which shot the air into 40 different pipes spread out at the bottom of the lake ... Officials found it had “unintended consequences” of mixing phosphorus-rich bottom water with the rest of the lake, according to minutes from an April 16 meeting of the state’s Lake Carmi Coordination Team ... Lake Morey, in Fairlee, had a “very successful” alum treatment in 1986 and is in “better shape” since the treatment ...

 ... For the DEC, their plan B is aluminum sulfate treatments. It’s already gone through a feasibility study commissioned by the state, which estimated costs of alum treatments to be $2.6 million. It’s more money coming out of the state’s pockets, but good news, the process is already effective at another lake in the state ... If things go according to plan while following state and EPA regulations, the DEC hopes to start alum treatments by the spring of 2025.

A swim in a local lake or river is one of summer's greatest pleasures. It's important though to take safety precautions to avoid health problems. Activities that bring you in contact with water (swimming, kayaking, water skiing, sailboarding, etc.) are NOT recommended when:

• there are signs of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) in the water, for example, when a dense foam or blue-green color appears, you could be at risk of contacting or ingesting the associated cyanotoxins; 
• the water is full of sediments and not clear  (for example after an intense rain) in order to prevent ingesting fecal coliform bacteria (E. Coli).

La baignade dans un lac ou une rivière est l’un des plus grands plaisirs de l’été. Il importe toutefois de rester vigilant et de respecter certaines consignes préventives.

• S’il semble y avoir des cyanobactéries (algues bleu-vert) dans l’eau, par exemple, présence d’une écume dense de coloration bleu-vert. Vous éviterez ainsi le contact et l’ingestion de cyanotoxines qu’elles libèrent.
• Si l’eau semble chargée de sédiments et n’est pas limpide (par exemple, après de fortes pluies) afin d’éviter d’ingérer des coliformes fécaux (E. coli).

... le Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation (MAPAQ) renchérit en proposant désormais le concept de bande riveraine élargie .Dans son document Bande riveraine élargie : un petit pas sur la largeur, un grand pas pour vos champs et vos cours d’eau, il rappelle que « le respect d’une bande riveraine minimale de 3 mètres de largeur à partir de la ligne des hautes eaux est un premier pas pour réduire l’impact des activités agricoles sur les cours d’eau » mais que « l’aménagement optimal de la végétation de la bande riveraine et son élargissement de quelques mètres augmentent son efficacité et offrent plusieurs autres bénéfices. Ce petit pas supplémentaire peut ainsi faire toute une différence. »

Changer le type de production sur les terres agricoles inondables pourrait améliorer la qualité de l’eau dans les rivières tributaires du lac Champlain. Les grandes cultures, comme le maïs et le soya, qui poussent le long des rives des cours d’eau ... relâchent beaucoup de phosphore lors du ruissellement des eaux de pluie et de la fonde de la neige ... Le problème est accentué quand les terres en zones inondables sont immergées lors des crues printanières ... Convaincre les propriétaires de ces terres de changer de types de culture permettrait de réaliser des gains environnementaux importants ... La qualité de l’eau des tributaires de la baie Missisquoi sera d’ailleurs l’un des thèmes abordés lundi prochain lors de l’assemblée générale annuelle de l’OBV. Changing the type of production in agricultural flood zones could improve the water quality in the tributaries  of Lake Champlain. Cultivation of field crops like corn and soy beans growing on stream banks  lead to the release of large amounts of phosphorous during erosion events caused by extreme rain and snowmelt. The problem is accentuated when land in flood zones is submerged during spring thaws. Convincing landowners to change the types of crops grown in these areas could lead to important environmental gains. Développement économique Canada pour les régions du Québec (DEC) a notamment accordé une contribution non remboursable de 61 810 $ à Vitalité Frelighsburg, dans le cadre du Programme d’infrastructure communautaire de Canada 150 (PIC150), pour l’amélioration des installations du parc Paul-Goodhue. La réfection du stationnement, ainsi que des aires de jeux et de sports, a été réalisée en 2017.

But when the email arrived, it said prices were actually "subject to change" and that Bell was planning to increase its price for internet service by $5, two months later. A small claims court deputy judge ruled it would be unfair and prejudicial if Bell changed contract terms.

1. Le Parc d’environnement naturel de Sutton se voit attribuer une subvention de 119 691 $ pour la modernisation de son réseau de sentiers pédestres. I

2. L’entreprise Plastiques Moulin, de Lac-Brome, obtient une aide financière remboursable de 300 000 $ pour améliorer sa productivité et sa capacité de production. 

3. La  Ville de Brigham reçoit par ailleurs 45 362 $ pour l’agrandissement et la remise en état de la salle communautaire locale,

Freight trains still come down a steep hill to a sharp curve in the middle of the town, as often as four times a day, some carrying hazardous materials.

High-speed internet will soon be available in Brome-Missisquoi in every corner of the county.  As of  2018, a network of fibre-optic network will be deployed wherever it is not currently  available. It will take between 3 and 5 years to build the entire network. Some sectors will be served sooner.
