Burlington has released 8 million gallons of dirty water since the start of 2018 — more than triple the total from last year ... Burlington has a combined sewer system, designed to collect both sewage and some stormwater runoff from the street in one pipe. Heavy rains can overwhelm the system, leaving the treatment plants unable to store or fully treat the torrent.
Wet weather tests Burlington rain gardens
Joel Banner Baird - Burlington Free Press - Aug. 15, 2017
Storm runoff is best behaved when it dilly-dallies on its way downhill ... When stormwater is allowed to seep into underlying soil, much of rain's payload of phosphorus and other mineral nutrients becomes trapped — and is less likely to spur excess algae and plant growth in ponds and lakes.

Neliana Ferraro - WCAX 3 - Jun 18, 2018
It is brief, heavy downpours like the ones we saw Monday that Burlington Public Works says is part of the problem-- that, plus high-strength wastewater from breweries and food producers that is high in carbon. Those two things work together to overpower the system and send partially treated wastewater into Lake Champlain. Right now, breweries around the county are trying to figure out how to lower those carbon levels. We went to Magic Hat in South Burlington to learn about the system it uses.

Jennifer Hermes - Environmental Leader - June 25, 2018
Brewery waste includes yeast, spent grains and hops, and managing waste is expensive and challenging, local breweries say. Managing water and wastewater, too, is particularly challenging for breweries, considering that beer is made up of 90% to 95% water.

The unpermitted pollution came from a sewage overflow Monday night at the intersection of Southwind and Oak Beach drives, near Flynn Avenue, according to a statement from Burlington’s Public Works Department. Sewage bubbled to the street level and a public works crew used an industrial sewer cleaner to remove as much of the sewage and other debris as possible.

August Rains Unleash Sewage Into Vermont Waterways
Taylor Dobbs - VPR -Aug 23, 2017
The overflows happen when the combination of sewage and stormwater entering the city’s treatment system are coming in faster than the system can treat the water. When this happens, specially designed “combined sewer overflow” systems send the excess untreated water directly into nearby waterways.
