The federal Environmental Protection Agency has notified Vermont officials that they will sign off on the state's plan to clean up Lake Champlain. The state's plan call for the volume of phosphorous entering the lake to be reduced each year from 631 metric tons to 418.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Friday released new limits for phosphorous pollution levels in Lake Champlain. The Total Maximum Daily Load establishes limits on how much phosphorus Vermont is allowed to release into Lake Champlain. The EPA has set pollution targets for 12 regions of the lake.
