Source Of Missisquoi River Fuel Leak Still Unknown

Authorities are still trying to determine the source of a weekend fuel leak into the Missisquoi River in Swanton. The Swanton Fire Department successfully contained an oily sheen on the Missisquoi Saturday afternoon. Officials with the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation said that the sheen seemed to be bubbling up from under a sluice wall, which has water channels that lead into the river.

"Definitely not regular gasoline," Stell said of the pollutant. "It's either fuel oil, diesel fuel, something in that consistency." Stell authorities believe quick action by the fire department prevented much of the spill from flowing down river.

First responders were called to Foundry Street Saturday afternoon. Officials say there appears to be some sort of gas being discharged into the Missisquoi River. However, officials are still trying to locate the source of the leak. In the mean time crews are using floating booms to contain the gas.
