The municipal electoral map has changed. Citizens of Sutton will no longer vote for the mayor and all six councilors. On November 5th, citizens will vote for the mayor and only one councilor to represent the district where they live or own property.
The creation of six electoral districts provides an opportunity to remind candidates and citizens of a key tenet of representative government. Elected representatives, according to the great UK parliamentarian Edmund Burke, must ‘above all and in all cases, put the interests of the citizens ahead of their own and ensure that their judgment is not sacrificed to anyone instead of serving the citizenry…. to do otherwise is a betrayal’.
Candidates have until October 6th 16h30 to submit nomination papers.
