The Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) is seeking innovative proposals to reduce phosphorus pollution from agricultural sources in the St. Albans Bay watershed. Proposals are due in the LCBP office by electronic submission on January 5th, 2017 at 4:30 p.m.

The Agency of Natural Resources is seeking input on how resources should be directed towards the goal of reducing pollution and improving water quality in the Missisquoi Bay watershed. Several public meetings to be held in Georgia, Jay, and Franklin later this month will provide opportunities for discussion and comment on a recently completed draft action plan for the watershed.

Several factors combined to drive the worst blue-green algae bloom in northeastern Lake Champlain's Missisquoi Bay in recent history. Scientists attribute these unsightly and toxin-producing blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, blooms to a changing climate and changing nutrient inputs from our intensifying land use practices.

One of the largest remaining elm trees in New England has died. But the wood from the 109-foot-tall slippery elm tree is heading on to a new life — as custom furniture. And a percentage of the sales proceeds will support research to breed elms that are resistant to Dutch elm's disease. The fungal disease — carried by an invasive insect — killed millions of stately elm trees across the country beginning in the early part of the last century.
